Don't be an uneducated noob, be a smartypants noob instead (without acting like it)
There's nothing more annoying than not knowing what everyone's talking about and having to ask all the time. So here's a list of some terms that you need to know:
DoT – Damage over Time. When you cast a spell or use an ability that does damage over an extended period of time instead of doing instant damage.
DPS – Damage Per Second. This is the amount of damage you can potentially do in one second. Some classes are heavily focused on this.
AoE – Area of Effect. This is generally a term used for area attacks or heals.
Aggro – What happens to you when your computer breaks down. In wow however, aggro is when a mob attacks you. The tank usually pulls mobs using aggro, so they attack him leaving the rest of the group free to attack the mob.
LFG – Looking for group. Whenever someone is starting a raid they type this in to get things going.
Rez – Ressurection. When someone wants to be resurrected instead of running all the way back to his body.
Corpserunning – When your healer was too lazy or cared too little to resurrect you and you have to take the long journey back to your body.
Loot – Everything you get from a dead monster is referred to as loot.
Kiting – This is a tactic that you can use to do damage to an enemy that may be a lot stronger than you. What you do is to aggro him and run away just far enough to be out of his range, but to still have him in you attack raduis. This way you can do damage to it without getting any back.
Instance – An instance is simply a dungeon. When you go on a raid, you're doing an instance.
